Wide Open

January 20th, 2013

Last night the stargazer lilies in a vase on my coffee table opened up, simply unfolded themselves in all the vulnerability that is so difficult when it comes to trust and love among humans. They don’t consider that if they reveal their beautiful tender innards, they might get hurt. They don’t worry about whether it’s the right time to unfold in public. They don’t obsess over what might happen if they withhold nothing, if they give up absolutely every secret they’ve carried from bulb to flower. I wonder why I’m often so careful, so protective, so hunched over in order not to expose … what?! ¬†What is so important that we would rather seem strong and bulletproof and tough than to open our arms and say, “Here I am, open for business.” Consider the lilies of the field — they put me to shame.

  1. When I first started blogging, I was wide open. Now I’m so careful. Both my blog and my psyche suffer as a result.
