Beautiful Town

June 3rd, 2012

For more than two weeks in May and June, my city is alive with the arts during Spoleto Festival. An abandoned building near my office was hung with this banner, and it makes me happy every time I pass it on my way for coffee. Whether you attend any of the events or not, you can’t help but be enriched by the atmosphere during this time, aware of an extra added vibrancy and sense of anticipation. The arts DO make everything more beautiful: sorrow more bearable, joy deeper, loneliness alleviated, inertia banished. Even though I know I will never be expert, my painting class gives an edge of gold to my day. Music provides an ever-changing soundtrack for my life, whether I’m listening to Barber’s Adagio for Strings on a melancholy day or ┬áKylie Minogue when I’m feeling happy and carefree and young again. And phot0graphy helps me see with a third eye. Thank you, Spoleto Festival, for reminding me how much I depend on art for a big life.

  1. Very nice post. You just gave me a new perspective on the event. We have lived in Charleston since 2000 and we have never gone to the event. I guess you could say that I do not consider myself an artsy sort of fellow. Maybe we will check it out next year. Maybe we will expand our horizons a little and check it out.

Spoleto is awesome. This is the first year I haven’t bought a bunch of tickets and I feel really regretful. I think inertia overcame me, but I am so thankful we have this in our city.
